Downtown display of veterans uniforms serves as a reminder

Those strolling down Illinois Street enjoying the fine weather last weekend might have noticed military uniforms gracing many of the store windows downtown.

These displays, meant to remind citizens to take a moment to think about servicemen and women past and present, are the effort of local man Larry Nelson in conjunction with the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

The uniforms come from locals, living and dead, who participated in World War II, Korea and Vietnam all the way up to current conflicts. There are about 40 uniforms.

“It’s meant to call attention to veterans,” Nelson said.

Nelson coordinated the same display last year. Uniforms include many areas of service such as Pauline Kirk’s army nurse cadet uniform featured at the Veteran’s Affairs clinic. Kirk was a cadet in training in Denver during WWII.

“It just reminds them of the importance of freedom and the people that brought it to them,” Nelson said.

In front of most of the uniforms is a plaque detailing the owner’s name, rank, branch of service and in which conflict they were involved.
