Battling eventual state D2 champions Giltner in the opening round of state at Grand Island, Leyton's Kaitlyn Berner drives the ball into a nest of Hornets as Katy Ernest (14), Diedra Waite and Kelsey Waite (1) get set for any return. Leyton played well but lost in three sets. The game was played at Grand Island Central Catholic High School.

After ending the Leyton Warriors run at a state championship last week, the second seeded Giltner Hornets went on to win the Class D2 Volleyball State Championship on Saturday at the Heartland Event Center in Grand Island.

The Hornets defeated the No. 5 Stuart Broncos 3-0 a day after the Broncos upset No. 1 seed Bertand in five sets. After eliminating the Warriors, Giltner edged No. 6 Sterling in five sets before meeting Stuart in the finals.
