Dix man allegedly threatens "non-virgins" at Potter-Dix school

Cheyenne County Sheriff’s deputies requested an arrest warrant Tuesday for Charles Smith, following a series of phone calls to Potter-Dix High School in which Smith allegedly threatened to kill all “non-virgins” at the facility.

The Dix resident was taken into custody by Sergeant Brandon Loy of the the Kimball County Sheriff’s Office.

Potter-Dix administrators contacted the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 11, reporting that a threatening message had been left on the school’s voice mail over the weekend.

Chief Deputy Fred Wiedeburg responded to the contact. According to a court affidavit, school administrators informed the deputy they had discovered the number in the system’s caller logs and dialed. A male voice had answered, identifying himself as “Dusty” Smith.

School officials told Wiedeburg that Smith’s voice was identical to the one on the recorded message.

The message, which Wiedeburg checked as part of the investigation, included an apparent threat from the caller that he “had to kill all non-virgins and the people that they attend school with.”

A court affidavit states that the deputy knew of the person named by the school from previous “law enforcement contacts” in Sidney.

During Wiedeburg’s visit to the school, another call was received from the same number. Wiedeburg answered and learned the man was in Dix. The Kimball County Sheriff’s Office was contacted.

That office dispatched Sgt. Loy and provided information that Smith had allegedly issued similar threats to the U.S. Air Force and the federal mint located in Denver.

Loy took Smith into custody. According to court documents Smith resisted arrest.

Authorities in Kimball County reportedly transferred the suspect to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff for behavioral evaluation. He was charged in Cheyenne County Court on a felony charge of Terroristic Threats.
