A Celebration of Life Service for Dan A. Nelson will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, Neb. on Wed., Jan. 8, 2014 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Jeff Adams officiating. Interment will be held following the service at the Minden Cemetery at Minden, Neb. at 1:30 p.m.

Dan Allen Nelson, 70 of Holdrege, passed away on Sat., Jan. 4, 2014 following a courageous battle with cancer at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Dan was born Feb. 4th, 1943 in Minden, the eldest of four children born to Marvin and Elliene (Danielson) Nelson.

The family made their home in several Nebraska communities, where Dan received his education from Broken Bow, Merna, and Holdrege, before settling to Minden, where he graduated from Minden High School with the class of 1961.

Upon graduation he continued to work for his father at the Phillips 66 station in Minden. Dan then started at Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas in 1965, where he worked in various positions from service man to regional manager over a thirty year period, and then worked as an insurance agent in Holdrege for 10 years before retirement.

On June 10, 1962 he was united in marriage to Sharon Wilcox of Minden and to this union two daughters were born: Marcelyn and Pamela. The family made their home in Minden, Hastings, Utica, Dighton, Kan., Plainville, Sidney, and then Holdrege since 1983.

Over the years Dan served in many capacities within his church and community including: the First United Methodist Church Board and committees, member of the Lions Club, Volunteer Fire Departments, Nursing Home Board of Directors, Officer in Blue Flame and the Elks Club. His hobbies included: HAM Radio, attending his grandchildren's activities, loved tinkering with cars, especially a 1976 Corvette he had, enjoyed radio talk shows-every night, and most of all loved time with his family.

Dan was preceded in death by his father, Marvin and his stepfather, Kenneth Christensen. He leaves to mourn his passing; his wife, Sharon of Holdrege; his mother, Elliene Christensen of Minden; two daughters: Marcie Tobler and her husband, Kent of Kearney, and Pam Barnes and her husband, Greg of Seward; four grandchildren: Kelsi Amen and her husband, Sean of Grand Island, Brittney Barnes of Holdrege, Courtney Johnson and husband, Jay of Bertrand, and Trey Barnes of Seward; one great-grandchild, Rylee Amen of Grand Island; two brothers: Lynn Nelson and his wife, Linda of Minden, and Kendall Nelson and his wife, Pat of Holdrege; one sister, Mary Carlson and her husband, Jim of Utica; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Tues., Jan. 7, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in Dan's honor and will be designated at a later date.
