Raiders in run away win over Chadron

It took just 18 seconds for Paxton Ehler to put the Red Raiders on the path to victory. His three pointer shortly after tip off was the start of a 46-33 non-league win over the Chadron Cardinals at the Cabela’s Athletic Facility Friday night.

Though Ehler’s opening three pointer was soon answered with an equalizer by Vonsinh Sayaloune, Sidney took the lead for good moments later, when Rosenbaum dropped in a free throw.

The Raiders never looked back. In the final two minutes Ehler hit another three and a foul shot for a 13-6 lead after one quarter of play.

“They’re a really good team and Spencer Eliason is a dangerous player,” said Ehler. “We did a good job of holding him down.”

Though Eliason, a 6-8 center, averages nearly 20-points per game he was held to 13 on Friday. With 17 points Ehler led all scorers. Tyler Winholz dropped in 7 points while Cody Frerichs added a fourth-period spark with 6 points. Lucas Rosenbaum and Lane Harvey were good for 5 points each.Sayaloune added 12 points.

Jake Bargan opened the second quarter with two three pointers in the first three minutes. His second three brought the Cardinals to within two at 14-12. The Raiders quickly took back the momentum when Ehler hit his third three of the opening half. Tyler Wintholz and Ehler each added layups to finish the second for Sidney.

The Raiders lead at the half was 21-14.

Though Harvey began the third quarter with a layup, Sayualoune dropped in his second bomb of the game. But a two pointer each by Rosenbaum and Ehler was Sidney’s response. Chadron did, however, manage to trim three points from its deficit after three quarters at 31-27.

With a tighter game entering the fourth quarter, Frerichs ignited the Raiders just seconds in. He took a pass from Rosenbaum under the basket and converted a layup after only 10 seconds had elapsed.

Frerichs was followed by a Logan Lewis basket. Rosenbaum then dropped in a pair of free throws. Before the visitors could get started Sidney scored 6 in a row for a 10-point advantage. Chadron came back with two unanswered scores but Frerichs answered those buckets with a pair of his own.

The first came on a quick pass from Wintholz under the hoop.

“I was getting good passes from my teammates and finding open spots,” Frerichs said. “Sometimes you’re just on, but it helps when you get the ball in such good spots.”

Wintholz followed the Frerichs mini-run with one of his own. He scored Sidney’s final two baskets of the game.

“They’re ranked 8th in their class for a reason,” said Harvey. “Eliason is usually automatic from inside but tonight he wasn’t.”

The Raiders record advanced to 12-4 after the game before they notched another win the following night against district rival Scottsbluff. The Cardinals are 11-5 on the season.
