Boys Track - Warriors edge South Platte for fourth

Creek Valley's Michel takes high jump crown

Mason Low and Keegan Michel helped lead the Creek Valley Storm boys as they hosted the Storm Invite on Tuesday. The Leyton boys, meanwhile, earned their fourth-place finish on the strength of a solid team effort across the board.

Michel gave the home-town crowd reason to celebrate, winning the high jump early in the meet despite being away from the practice field for most of the week. He, and many of his teammates, recently returned from a Future Farmers of America event.

"I thought I should have cleared 5-10 today," said Michel. "With missing practice the important thing for me now is to get my approach down. Now that I'm practicing again I'll be able to get some consistency back."

Behind Michel, teammate Sean Richardson and Leyton's Zach Hellie also finished top six in the high jump. Richardson was fourth and Hellie sixth. Both are freshmen.

In the throwing events, meanwhile, Low had another good meet. He finished second in the shot put and third in the discus. A pair of Leyton throwers also put on impressive medal performances. Jacob Ernest was fifth in the shot put while Lane Rathman was sixth in the discus.

Other local medalists included the Warriors' Alex C. Frerichs and Michel who finished fifth and sixth in the 100 meters. Brennen Cruise completed the 400 meters in fifth for Leyton while Aaron Buttle of the Storm was sixth.

Two Warriors gained points in the mile, with Seth Schuessler coming in third and Blake Draper in sixth.

In the 300-meter hurdles Kenny Ernest cleared the heights in fine form with his fourth-place finish. Cody McKay hopped, skipped and jumped his way to fourth in the triple jump.

The 192 points Burns garnered in the boys competition far outpaced the rest of the field. Pine Bluffs, Wyo, picked up 136 points for second. Among the locals, the Warriors finished fourth with 69 points while host Creek Valley finished up in sixth with 46 points.
