Godfrey second, Creek Valley solid in home invite

With a quiet breeze and warm temperatures it was the perfect day for golf as the Creek Valley Storm held their annual Boys Invite at Chappell Golf Course Tuesday.

By winning a one-hole playoff Lane Godfrey secured a second-place individual medal for the host Storm, while the team finished fifth among the 10 varsity squads competing.

By putting three players in the top five, Bayard took the top-team prize with a total of 324 strokes. Perkins County (340) and Chase County (364) completed the top three.

Creek Valley's total stood at 371.

The individual winner was Roman Konvicka of Bayard. Trae Blanco, also of Bayard, matched Godfrey's 77 to claim third. Godfrey won the second-place medal by parring the playoff hole to Blanco's bogey.

Behind Godfrey, Creek Valley had solid rounds from the rest of the team. The other varsity scores included Brett Godfrey (97), Wyatt McMillen (98), Alex Dexter (99) and Corey Phillips (105).

"It was a beautiful day for golf and a pretty decent day for us," said Storm Coach Cyd Hanson. "We had some pretty good scores and hopefully we'll be in good shape for districts."

As for Godfrey, who went around the nine-hole track in 38-39, he struck the ball consistently well to go along with a good putting round.

He had just 28 putts over the 18 holes.

"He's been so consistent for us," said Hanson. "He doesn't get frazzled when something goes wrong, he just keeps playing for every shot."

One place where Godfrey's cool demeanor showed itself was on the par-4 third hole. After a perfect drive the Storm senior hit his approach just to the back of the green about 12 feet past the pin. His birdie putt, however, rolled about eight feet beyond the hole.

Godfrey regrouped and calmly lined up the par saver. He drained it in the center of the cup.

Phillips also had a good round for most of his day despite his 105. Hanson had enough confidence in him to play him second in the lineup. His high score was the result of a couple of big numbers.

"I know he can shoot better than that and he will," said Hanson. "He had these blow-up holes like a lot of us have had. There are times when it's just better to accept double bogey and move on."

Creek Valley has just one more tournament before districts on May 19. The Storm will be at Sutherland for an Invite on May 13, with an opportunity to play the course where districts will be played the following week.

The District D-5 District Tournament will be held on May 19, at Oregon Trail Golf Course in Sutherland.
