U-14 team downs Sterling

Sidney (8)  vs   Sterling Orange (7)

Sterling struck first after goalkeeper Chantal Riggs had a good save, but the Orange scored a rebound.

J.R. Balandran evened the score for Sidney, thanks to a pass from offensive right winger Hannah Rawley.

Sterling again struck beating Riggs and her defensive line.

Striker Balandran again evened the score on after receiving a pass from offensive left winger Brody Chavez.

And that's the way the game proceeded. Sterling countered and landed back to back goals. Before the end of the first half Balandran scored again, from another feed by Chavez, to bring the Blackhawks only a goal down going into the second half.

"The offensive line of Balandran, Chavez, and Roawley, had quite a few great runs, this is a tough team," Coach Tina Mines said.

The two sides traded goals to open the second half, Balandran again doing the honors for Sidney.

Balandran scored with another assist coming from Chavez to even things.

Not to be outdone, Sterling scored again within minutes of the Blackhawks. Again, however, Sidney and Balandran responded. He then put the Blackhawks out on top--but not for long.

Sterling Orange found the net with only minutes left.

Looking at a tie with only 40 seconds left to the second half Balandran again scored on a lone run to give the Blackhawks the last goal and the win.

The defense had a shaky moment when Orange struck a shot headed on goal. Riggs blocked, and Sterling picked up the rebound and fired again as Riggs was trying to reposition herself. Fullback Devon Shelor, left back Kate Riggs, and right back winger Drew Reece worked in a combined effort to keep the ball out of the net and cleared it from the Blackhawks defensive zone before another attempt could be made by Orange.

"I was happy with the tie, but when J.R. scored again for us with such little time left was just the icing on the cake for us," Mines said. "The whole team worked very well together and considering they had no one on the side lines to be substituted out with they didn't let that affect them but used it to prove we are a force to be reckoned with, we are good."

Sidney (4)   vS   Sterling Blue (2)

Sidney opened up the game with an early goal by Balandran from a rebounded attempt. Then Brody Chavez came in for a goal inside the six-yard box.

Chavez hit the back of the net again moments later.

The majority of the first half Sidney had possession, keeping the Blue team from the goal and quickly stalling or halting any attempts to organize an attack.
