Former Sidney youth to compete in Junior Olympics

Just two years ago at age 12, Nick Edwards joined thelocal gun club in Soldotna, Alaska. He began shooting Trap and Skeet with other youth on a Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) team. He has practiced weekly since then, except for the middle of winter months when it reaches below zero and there is a heavy layer of snow on the ground.

The work paid off. This spring, Edwards competed in the first ever Alaska State Qualifier for the Junior Olympics (JO). He placed second overall in both Trap and Double Trap, which qualified him for the USAS National Junior Olympic Championships in Colorado Springs this July. He also qualified to shoot in the International Skeet event.

In Wobble Trap, the competitors shot five rounds of 25 targets for a possible score of 125. A single orange target could sail out of the trap house in random directions or altitudes. Edwards was second overall with a score of 121/125. This result included two perfect rounds of 25/25.

In Doubles Trap, the competitors shot three rounds of 50 targets, for a possible score of 150. In doubles, two targets leave the trap house at the same time, splitting into different directions. Edwards was second overall with a score of 116/150.

He will compete at the Junior Olympic Championships July 6-13 in Colorado Springs. The week prior, he will be practicing at the Sidney Shooting Park and Big Mac Gun Club in Ogallala.

Edwards lived with his parents, Dana and Kristi Edwards, in Sidney from 2004 to 2007. His father, Dana, worked as a Marine product specialist at Cabela's. Kristi Edwards was an RN employed at the Sidney Regional Medical Center.

Local family include Fran McCarty, Robert and Casey Cortney of Sidney, Brad and Robyn Hicks of Potter.
