Sidney to host Alaska team; wrestling dual set for Wednesday

Sidney’s high school wrestling squad will take part in a unique cultural exchange next week, hosting athletes from Alaska for two days, June 17-18.

Eight wrestlers from Alaska--many of them state qualifiers--will train at the school, tour Sidney and shop at the Cabela’s retail store.

On Wednesday, June 18, the wrestlers will compete in a dual, featuring Sidney’s Michael Muggli, Kane Taylor, Jack Fedderson and Derek Robb, as well as other area grapplers.

The event, set for 7 p.m. at Sidney High School, is open to the public. Afterwards, wrestlers and fans are invited to a potluck dinner, served by the Sidney Wrestling Club.

Sidney took part in similar wrestling exchanges in 1988, when they hosted a team from Germany, and in the early 1990s, when athletes from Maine visited.

“It’s been awhile since we’ve done this,” said Raiders wrestling coach John Ganser.

The group traveling from Alaska features eight wrestlers and a coach. They will stay with host families during their time in Sidney, taking part in a barbecue at Legion Park and other activities.

Sidney is the first stop on their wrestling exchange tour. They also travel to Ogallala, North Platte, Cozad and Kearney before returning to Alaska.
