The Battle of Summit Springs on July 11, 1869 successfully crushed the strength of the Dog Soldier Society of the Cheyenne. The society, made up of members of both the southern and northern Cheyenne scattered after their defeat. Previous battles with the troops under Major Carr had already reduced the numbers of warriors by nearly half and the surprise attack on that July day reduced their numbers by almost another half.
