Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

This week marks the last that Dr. Cal Cutright will be treating patients at the Sidney Regional Medical Center.

Forty-five years ago he was an outstanding athlete at Sidney High, then known as the “Maroons”. He furthered his education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he was a ‘walk on’ player on the taxi squad of the UN football team.

In his final year at Sidney High he joined the Sidney Men’s Chorus, later to be known as the Fort Sidney Colonels and participated in that group whenever he was in town until it disbanded after 49 years of entertaining audiences in local and surrounding towns. He had an outstanding tenor voice and also did small group and quartet appearances.

He entered Medical School at UNMC in Omaha and following graduation served as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force for 2 years during the Vietnam War.

He entered private practice on returning to Sidney and has served his community ever since. He organized a dance band which played locally and in surrounding towns. That band included Danny Zwickle, John Ford and his brother Bruce, all of whom attended his ‘retirement party’ at the Buffalo Point restaurant last Saturday night. Their last performance was in Campbell, Nebraska some 12 years ago. Brother Bruce still thinks of him as the youngest physician in town.

Even after ‘throwing in the towel’ for active practice he and his wife Lolly still consider Sidney their home. If you see Dr. Cal on the street and give thanks for his many years of service, I’m sure he will appreciate a “Hi’ and thanks if you are inclined to do so.

C.J. Cornelius

Sidney
