The Happening is happening next week

Jobs are abundant in Sidney.

The Cheyenne County Community of Employers is attempting to help area businesses in search of employees with its new event, The Happening, a career fair as well as a way to promote area businesses and clubs.

The community of employers hopes to attract potential employees from all over the panhandle to this event.

When the community of employers, a Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce committee held a meeting in the spring it decided there were four major issues facing Sidney employers. They were education, housing, recruitment and retention.

“We decided as a committee we needed to reach out on the retention piece as well,” said Wanda Brogren, chairperson of the CCCE.

The Happening is also an effort to inform interested parties about area clubs and services. Ensuring that new residents know about local organizations and activities could help businesses retain employees, Brogren said. Although Sidney holds a picnic for newcomers each September, the CCCE wanted to do a little more to reach out to new residents.

“If you’re new to the community, you don’t know where to turn,” Brogren said.

The CCCE plans to make The Happening a regular event, with hopes to hold another fair in the spring.

The job fair is not strictly to reach out to the unemployed. Employed area residents who might have unemployed relatives living in other areas could learn of potential jobs for their loved ones.

“It’s new, it’s something different,” Brogren said.

Area organizations are welcome to hold fundraisers such as hot dog sales or face painting during the evening.

The group chose to hold the fair at the park shelter house so that parents can visit the booths while children play. At this time there are 18 businesses with employment opportunities planning to take part in the fair as well as eight clubs and organizations. Anyone who’s interested can call the chamber to reserve space. The Happening will take place at the Legion Park Shelter House from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 14. Everyone in attendance will be asked to complete a survey. The CCCE will give away prizes at the end of the night.
