1921 to 2014

Carol E. Harris, 92, passed away on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014 at the Devonshire Acres Nursing Home. Visitation will be Thursday, Aug .28, 2014 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home.  Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Pastor Ben Hackbarth officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Carol was born Aug. 23, 1921 in Potter to Warren Dewey (W.D.) and Kate Lydia (Herboldsheimer) Mathewson. She grew up in the Potter area and graduated from Potter High School in 1939. She continued her education at the School of Nursing in Scottsbluff in 1942. Carol worked as a registered nurse at Sidney's Taylor Hospital and Sterling's Logan County Hospital. She later retired from nursing in 1961.

Carol married Jim Rezac on June 23, 1943 in Wilber, Neb. They adopted a daughter Charyn in 1946. Carol and Jim divorced in 1958. She married Bill Harris on April 12, 1961 in Potter and they later divorced. She was a member of the Sterling Foursquare Church in Sterling, enjoyed crocheting, reading, puzzles of all kinds and bird watching.

Carol is survived by her daughter, Charyn Betka and husband Rich of Aurora, Colo.; two brothers, Rodney Mathewson and wife Arlene of Sidney and Max Mathewson and wife Emma of Sterling; sister-in-law, Shirley Mathewson of Sidney and brother-in-law, Dale McKinney of Sidney. She is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews; step-son Larry Harris and wife Deb of Iliff; one step-grandson and one step-granddaughter; special friends, Winona Harris and husband John of Sterling and many other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Leota; brother, Wendel; both husbands and on step-granddaughter.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Devonshire Acres Bird Feeder Fund or a charity of your choice.

Chaney-Reager Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
