'Tough Cookie' run/walk benefits Girl Scouts

The One Tough Cookie 2K Family Obstacle Walk/Run, hosted by local Girl Scouts, was a bright, bustling gathering on Sunday full of children and parents ready to have fun and get a little exercise.

The event was meant to help empower youth to adopt active, healthy lifestyles and help build a community of young runners. The smiling faces of the participants was evidence that the experience was a positive one.

Before the race, runners and their families mingled on the tennis courts at the Cheyenne County Community Center for games, face painting, dancing and pre-run warm-ups led by the ATA Family Martial Arts School.

As runners progressed on the course, they were met with obstacles they had to overcome.

Participants had to hit croquet balls through wickets, hop in gunny sacks, throw footballs through hula hoops, jump over hay bales, and more, as they raced their way to the finish.

Upon completing their run, each racer received a goody bag. Some lucky participants won door prizes donated by LifeSmiles.

Service Unit Manager Jenny Payton, coordinator for the event, estimated that about 120 people participated in the run. She considers this first year a success.

"I'm happy," she said, after the race. "I think it's a great turnout. And everyone looks worn out when we're done!"

Proceeds from the event benefit Sidney's Girl Scouts.
