Sidney dominates final home meet, confident for districts

The Sidney High varsity cross county teams dominated Hillside Golf Course on a cloudy and chilly Thursday afternoon at the Sidney Conference Invite – the team's final regular-season meet of the year.

The varsity boys posted a phenomenal score of 12, as it placed four of its runners in the top six. The girls registered an even better 10, as it swept the top five spots.

Seniors Hayden Lieneman, Jachob Wiedeburg and Brody McKnight placed first, second and third overall with times of 17:29, 17:34 and 17:54 respectively. Lieneman and McKnight set season-best times for the race. Wiedeburg misses his top season mark by one second.

After the race, Lieneman and Wiedeburg both felt like they ran much stronger today, after feeling slightly dissatisfied with how they had been performing over the last couple weeks.

"That race definitely got my confidence back," said Lieneman about his first individual win of the season. "The next two weeks we need to just maintain this effort."

This result should serve as nice springboard into districts next Thursday. Wiedeburg said that he and the team have a refreshed sense of confidence now, but knows it needs to stay focused. Expectations remain the same, though.

"Our expectation is still to go down to state and hopefully bring home a first-place trophy," Wiedeburg said. "We just have to run our best race."

Freshman Chantal Riggs won the girls' varsity race with a time of 21:18, 11 seconds ahead of second-place junior Preslie Allen.

Freshman Charlie Brockhaus finished third with a 21:34 and junior Erin Lindeman came in one second behind her for fourth. Jami Flores completed her 5K in 21:55.

The event's sixth-place runner didn't cross the finish line until 31 seconds after Sidney took the first five spots. Senior Maddie Stafford placed eighth with a time of 23:00.

In the junior varsity race, the Sidney boys took the top four spots with sophomore Logan Uhlir taking the title. The JV girls placed Abby Heller and Jolene Oliverius first and second respectively. Oliverius finished 32 seconds ahead of the next runner.

Sidney's Vincent Hernandez and Alex Johnson tied for first in the middle school event.
