Vernon Henry Westphalen

1930 to 2014

Vernon Henry Westphalen, 84 of Peetz, passed away Sat., Oct. 11, 2014 in Denver.  Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Sat., Oct. 18, at the Peetz United Methodist Church with Rev. Jodie Harless officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Vernon was born on Feb. 3, 1930 in Sidney, to Herman and Maurine (Eicher) Westphalen.  He attended 1st through 8th grade at Lorenzo Public Schools, High School at Sidney High School, graduating in 1947, and various trade schools.  He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953.  He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division in 1954 (Ft. Benning, Ga.).  While in the Army, he completed many courses including Leadership school, Jump School, Mechanics School, Heavy Drop School, and Cook School.  He was honorably discharged as a Corporal in May 1955.  He was an Independent Realtor, Owner/Operator of Delca Name Plate Co. manufacturing zinc car name plates from 1978 to 1994.  He retired in 1994.  He married Milly Ross on Nov. 25, 1959 in Las Vegas, Nev.  They were married for 54 years.  He was a stock car driver from 1950 to 1952 in Ft. Collins, Cheyenne, Scottsbluff, and Sidney.  He enjoyed traveling around the United States and oil painting nature landscapes.

He is survived by his wife Milly Westphalen; sons Tim and wife Kate of Sound Beach, N.Y. and Todd of Littleton; daughter Suzanne Schreyer and husband Fred of Broomfield; sister Carolyn Fehringer of Peetz; sisters-in-law Marilyn Ross of Sterling, Mary Jo and Jack Ruhter of Cheyenne, Jane and Don Aikin of Las Vegas, Deanna Ross of Peetz; brother-in-law Claude and Elizabeth Ross of Loveland; numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Maurine; sister Virginia Nagengast and husband Paul, brothers-in-law George Louderback, Donald Fehringer, Richard Ross, David Ross; nephews Steven Ruhter and Brian Aikin; several extended family members.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Peetz United Methodist Church care of Tennant Funeral Home, PO Box 1547, Sterling, CO 80751.
