1921 to 2014

Eleanor M. Zilmer, 93 of Sidney, passed away at the Sidney Regional Medical Center Extended Care on Thursday, October 30, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tues., Nov. 4th in the First United Methodist Church in Sidney with Rev. Tom Hyde officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron.

Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Monday from 1 to 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in Eleanor's name to the First United Methodist Church or the donor's choice.

Eleanor May Zilmer, the daughter of Charles Augustus and Mable May (Ricketts) Hudson was born in Chadron on April 30, 1921. She graduated from Chadron High School in May of 1939. On June 11, 1939 she was united in marriage to August Zilmer in Gordon. They lived in Chadron until moving to Los Angeles in 1940. In 1941, they moved to San Francisco where Eleanor was employed by the Army Transportation Corp and later she worked with the U.S. Maritime Service. In 1943, August enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the European Theater, returning in 1946 and they returned to the Los Angeles area. They had homes in Montrose and La Crescenta, Calif.. Following the birth of their son Joel in 1949, they returned to farm in the Lorenzo and Peetz areas. They moved to Sidney in 1953 where their son Jan and daughter Jarma were born.

Eleanor was employed by the Cheyenne County Welfare Office and later the Nebraska Employment Office. She enjoyed visiting over coffee with her neighbors and friends and loved flowers and spending much of her time gardening in her back yard. Eleanor enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. Eleanor is a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and belonged to the Methodist Women's Circle, Goal Gainers Extension Club and Surviving Spouses.

Survivors include her (2) sons: Joel Zilmer and wife Kathy (Dress) of Alliance and Jan Zilmer of Deerfield Beach, Fla .; (1) daughter: Jarma Frerichs and husband Doug of Gurley; (6) grandchildren: Chase Frerichs of Lincoln, Erin Armstrong of Alliance, Jeremy Zilmer of Tucson, Ariz., Lorie Wagner of Gentry, Ark., Davina McMillion of Aurora and Jake Clement of Deerfield Beach, Fla .; (7) great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy and numerous extended family members and friends.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband August in 1989, her parents, her step-mother: Dorothy, her parents-in-law: William and Agnes Zilmer, (2) brothers: Kenneth Hudson of Chadron and William Hudson of Crawford.
