Ex-police chief Cox dies at home

Larry Cox, who served as chief of the Sidney Police Department for eight years, died this morning at his home in Sidney. He was 61.

Cox was the police chief from June 2001 until his retirement in October 2009. He spent 33 years in law enforcement.

Paul Schaub, the Cheyenne County attorney who also serves as the ex officio county corner, said no foul play was suspected in the death. He is awaiting medical records from Cox's physicians before determining whether an autopsy would be performed.

"He was dedicated to his work and well respected in the community," Schaub said. "He'll be missed."

Gary Person, Sidney's city manager, was shocked at the news of Cox's death.

"I feel just heartbroken for the family," he said. "He was part of our community and a leader. Larry learned his love of law enforcement from being around his dad."

Oren Cox, Larry's father, previously served as the Cheyenne County sheriff.

"Larry loved law enforcement and loved the people who served in that capacity," Person added. "He was a local guy and genuinely cared about the community. It's a sad day for Sidney for someone of that age and someone who served the community so well to pass. It's just tough.

"You live life trying to make it worthwhile and have an impact while you're living it. He certainly did just that. His legacy of service speaks for itself."

There was no answer this morning at Cox's beige, one-story home not far from the Hillside Golf Course. One of his neighbors remembered Cox fondly for playing with his dog in the front yard of the house.

"I would see him outside with his little pug," said Sheena Jenson, who lives across the street from the Cox home and is also the daughter-in-law of Sheriff John Jenson. "I didn't really know him very well personally, but I know he enjoyed time outside with his pug."
