I’d like to start off by wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! This is a good time of year to reflect back on last year’s growing season and give thanks for all the many blessings we have received. There are always challenges in agriculture but at the end of the year we are lucky to be able to work with Mother Nature and our natural resources on a daily basis to produce food and fiber for our livelihood.
I wanted to make everyone aware of the upcoming educational events around the region that focus on no-till crop and forage production practices. I personally have been attending these events for the past several years. I always leave each conference feeling like it was time well spent. I also look forward to visiting with other no-till producers from around the region to discuss successes and occasional failures as we learn from each other’s experiences in continuous no-till production systems.
The first winter conference on the schedule is the granddaddy of them all, the No Till on the Plain’s Annual Winter Conference. The conference is scheduled for Jan. 27-28 at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kan. This year’s conference theme is “Unlocking the Potential on Your Farm.” No Till on the Plains winter conference attracts 1,200 producers annually to their conference. Featured speakers are experts in the field of no-till crop and forage production along with the benefits of improving soil health. The next conference on the schedule is the Colorado Conservation Tillage Association’s 25th Annual Winter Conference on Feb. 3-4. The CCTA winter conference is held at the Burlington Community Center, Burlington, Colo. I always enjoy going to the CCTA conference. This conference is a more local version of the NTOP winter conference. The topics for the speakers are related to the semi-arid high plains production region. Our own Panhandle No-till Partnership Winter Conference will be held on Feb. 10-11. The conference will be held at the Gering Civic Center, Gering, Nebraska. As chairman of the PNTP I feel we have put together an excellent conference for this year. We have brought together experts in soil health and no-till crop and forage production to speak at our conference. We have also invited producers in our region to speak about their farming operations and discuss the benefits they have seen with no-till crop production. Local meteorologist Don Day will also discuss the weather outlook for the upcoming growing season.

I plan to attend all of these educational conferences this coming winter. I really feel it is important to go to these conferences and listen to experts in the fields of soil health and no-till crop production. I also think it is important to network with other continuous no-till crop producers to learn from each other. I’ll look forward to seeing you at these events.
