Busy sports week on tap at Sidney schools

Sidney High School and Middle School will be the host to several big sports events this week.

At the high school, Red Raiders wrestling action takes center stage at the Cabela’s Athletic Facility on Thursday. The meet will feature a dual between the top two finishers from the Chase County Invite last week.

Sidney, the meet winner at Imperial, will square off with runner-up Sedgwick County at 6:45 p.m. So far this season, Sidney has won nine duals without a loss.

The high school matches will be preceded at 6 p.m. by several Sidney Wrestling Federation exhibition matches.

Basketball action begins at the middle school on Thursday with the continuation of the annual Minuteman Activities Conference Tournament. The MAC semifinals take place on Thursday for both boys and girls.

The top-seeded Potter-Dix Coyotes lead the girls into the semi’s with a game against No. 4 Bayard at 3 p.m. No. 3 Creek Valley hopes to knock off defending champ and No. 2 seed Leyton at 6:30 p.m.

The boys’ semifinals are also scheduled for Thursday. In the first matchup, No. 5 Potter-Dix takes on top-seeded Minatare at 4:45 p.m. No. 3 Leyton challenges No. 2 Bayard at 8 p.m.

The championships are slated for Saturday with the girls meeting up at 6:30 p.m. with the boys to follow at 8. The consolation games open the day with the girls at 3 p.m. and boys at 4:45.

The drama continues on Friday night at the high school as the Red Raiders’ boys’ basketball team (12-2) hosts arch rival Scottsbluff (10-3) at 7 p.m.in a Class B-6 showdown. The Raiders and Bearcats met earlier this season at WNCC’s Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff. Sidney will look to avenge their 67-54 loss on Dec. 6.

The Sidney girls (9-5, 3-0) also face a big district test on Friday when they hit the road to meet the Lady Bearcats (5-6, 5-0) at 7 p.m. The winner takes over sole possession of the top spot in District B-6.
