BOYS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Creek Valley falls to top seed in playoffs

Potter-Dix struggles in second half in 57-35 loss to Sutherland

Although fifth-seeded Creek Valley High (6-13) was eliminated from the D1-12 subdistrict tournament by the No. 1 Dundy-County Stratton Tigers (15-9), the Storm didn’t go quietly.

After taking a 15-11 lead after the first quarter and staying within two at the half, the Storm fell victim to a strong Tigers’ third quarter in a 55-45 loss at the Auditorium in Ogallala on Tuesday night.

With the Storm perhaps playing its best basketball of the season after consecutive wins against Wallace and Morrill, it opened up by setting the Tigers back on their paws over the first eight minutes. While Creek Valley cooled down in the second quarter by ending up on the short side of an 11-5 frame, they headed into the second half still very much in the game.

The Tigers responded in the third quarter by doubling up the Storm 18-9 for an 11-point lead after 24 minutes (40-29). Though Creek Valley managed to shade Dundy County by a point in the final quarter, it wasn’t enough to recover from the sluggish third.

Sutherland 57,

Potter-Dix 35

The Potter-Dix Coyotes fought the Sutherland Sailors even over the first half before succumbing 57-35 in a semifinal game of the D1-12 subdistrict tournament Tuesday night at the Auditorium in Ogallala.

The Coyotes eked out a one-point advantage, 13-12, after the first quarter. Dundy County, however, retrieved the lost point by halftime to even the contest at 21-21. The difference was made in the third quarter when the Sailors scored 25 points with Potter-Dix answering with just five.

The Coyotes finished their season with a record of 6-15 while Sutherland advances to 9-13.

Dundy County will meet No. 2 Sutherland in the finals at Ogallala on Thursday at 6 p.m. for the subdistrict championship.
