1928 to 2015

Mary Ann Baack, 86, a long time Sidney resident, passed away in Overland Park, Kan., Wednesday morning, Feb. 25, 2015.

Cremation has been held. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, March 9, in the

First United Methodist Church in Sidney. Inurnment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery.

No formal visitation is planned at this time. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel to sign Mary Ann's register book and leave condolences for the family. Mary Ann Baack, the daughter of Albert Olaf and Mary Magdelene (Roland) Holmgren was born on May 18, 1928 on a ranch in Sioux County north of Scottsbluff. Following her education, Mary Ann taught school for more than forty years in Nebraska, South Dakota and Colorado, including substitute teaching well into her seventies.

Mary Ann's favorite pastimes included reading, participating and leading Bible studies, scrapbooking and travel. She was proud to have visited all fifty states by the time she was eighty years old. Mary Ann was a member of the Colorado and Nebraska Teacher's Associations, served as Treasurer for St. Paul's Lutheran Church and President of the Sidney TOPS program for years.

Survivors include her daughters: Cheryl Bills and husband Stan of Sterling, Julie Gehrig and husband Don of Sidney and Laura Baack and husband Tom of Shawnee, Kan.; daughter-in-law: Kristi Modlin; step-daughter: Carli Williams; sisters: Arlene Schaefer of Harrison, Neb., Jane Skavdahl and husband Howard of Richland, Wash. and Becky Smith and husband Kon of Mission, S.D.; sister-in-law: Marji Holmgren (11) grandchildren, (11) great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by (2) husbands: Earl Baack and Frank Modlin, (1) son: Kemp Modlin, (2) brothers: Pat Holmgren and Jim Holmgren, (1) sister: Alberta Richmond and husband George and brothers-in-law: Charley Schaefer and Alvin Publow.
