WNCC hosts career day for area H.S. sophomores

Western Nebraska Community College hosted its annual Southern Panhandle Sophomore Career Conference on Monday morning at the Sidney campus.

More than 200 sophomores from Sidney, Leyton, Potter-Dix, Bridgeport, Kimball, Garden County and South Platte high schools filled the halls of WNCC to attend presentations covering a wide variety of career options, resume advice and the do's and don'ts of interviews.

The career day is a partnership between WNCC, ESU 13 and the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce. There were three two-part sessions with 11 different informative presentations in each session. The students were able to decide which presentations they wanted to attend based on their own interests.

The volunteer presenters worked in fields such as cosmetology, law enforcement, visual arts, pharmacy, computer technology, agriculture, media and entrepreneurship. Students were able to ask questions and get advice about how to pursue a job in that certain occupation. After the presentations, the students gave their feedback through a survey to get an idea of what the students would like to see at the conference in the future.

Cheyenne County sheriffs Fred Wiedeburg and Adam Frerichs along with Sidney Police Chief BJ Wilkinson, Sidney High School Resource Officer Curtis Hofrock and Officer Jim Bush spoke to students interested in becoming involved in law enforcement and what it takes to get started in the right direction.

"If you like change and diversity, this is the right job. Not only do you not know what you're going to be doing day to day, you don't know what you're doing hour to hour," Wiedeburg said. "The sky's the limit and every day is different."

James Hashley, WNCC's information technology assistant director, gave students information about jobs in IT and IT lingo by playing a game of Jeopardy.

According to many of the volunteers and Student Services Coordinator Tricia England, WNCC has hosted this conference for many years. The students who attended also received a WNCC backpack, shirts, sunglasses, snacks and school supplies.
