Sidney holds triangular speech meet to prepare for districts

For many, standing in front of your peers to deliver a speech seems daunting, but the Sidney High School Speech Team makes it look easy.

Sidney hosted a triangular speech meet with Leyton and Potter-Dix on Monday afternoon at the high school.

Speech team coach Jack Thorpe said this meet was one last opportunity for students from Sidney, Potter-Dix and Leyton to perform in front of judges before their Class B-6 and Class D-1 respective district meets on March 16. No rankings or awards were given for each categories during the triangular meet.

Students competed in their respective categories including: Oral Interpretation of Drama (OID), Duet, Humorous, Serious, Entertainment, Persuasive, Extemporaneous and Informative.

"This is kind of an atypical speech meet," said Sidney's Will Castner. "Usually for each category there will be a first round and a second round, then the best six get called back for finals. After finals, the judges will rank you one through six."

Castner, a second-year speech team member, competes in the the Informative and Extemporaneous categories.

"In the Extemporaneous Category, you draw a topic the day of the meet and you have one hour to prepare for it," Castner said. "Today we were able to get our topics early in order to practice."

Monday's extemporaneous topic dealt with politics and the 2016 presidential election. Kollyn Weimer delivered her speech about why Scott Walker is the best 2016 presidential candidate.

At the triangular meet, only two rounds were held for each category. During larger meets, the each team has the opportunity to gain points, but overall the competition is individual based on the performances.

Junior Josh Austad competes in the Duet Category with his partner Rachelle Swain. During the performance, Austad attempts to burglarize Swain's home only it backfires when she takes him hostage using simply a water gun.

"I'm a little more nervous for today's meet," admitted Austad. " Overall, I think this season has gone pretty well."

To get prepared for each meet, Austad said that he and his partner typically practice everyday. When it comes to performing in front of judges, Austad said he's used to it.

"Sometimes I goof off in class so I'm used to talking in front of people and improving," Austad said while laughing.

The Sidney High School Speech Team members who are heading to districts include: Jack Johnson, Mitch Verhulst, Mitchell Renkert, Elena Dishman, Josh Austad, Rachelle Swain, Davis Burch, Samee Kaus, Emma Brosnan, Jonathan Stokes, Meagan Neal, Will Castner, Kollyn Weimer, Moselle Yohn, Cassy Ross, Abbie Fraas, Halle Ramsey and Jacob Evertson.
