Sidney teams face tough foes at Invite

Girls tie for 3rd, boys finish 4th

GOTHENBURG, Neb. – Both the boys and girls track and field teams had another strong meet as the Red Raiders went up against a field of strong Class A and B teams at the Dutch Zorn Invite on Thursday afternoon.

The girls finished in a tie for third with Ogallala by scoring 80 points, while Holdrege (148) and Gothenburg (83) were the top two teams. The boys' total of 85 points put them in fourth place. District B-6 rival McCook won the boys competition with 124 points with Holdrege (99) and Ogallala (87) taking the next two places.

"This was our best competition by far this season and we knew that coming in," said Red Raiders head coach John Ganser. "For the most part we competed hard and prepared well and that's the main thing."

The boys paved their way to a strong meet with four event wins which accounted for a large chunk of their point total. Meanwhile, the girls earned their place by gaining 13 top-six finishes as they continued to be strong in the sprints.

Jake Heeren had a big win in the shot put as he took down the reigning state champion, Tanner Borchardt of Gothenburg. Heeren, who earned bronze at state as a sophomore last season, edged his senior rival by just over nine inches.

Hayden Lienemann, who usually runs the 800, ran the mile for the second week in a row and again crossed in first. While Lienemann was expecting to run the 800 before the meet, the event organizers decided to change to a single-event schedule format with all finals due to threatening weather. Brenner Keane backed up Lienemann's effort by taking fifth.

"I was hoping for something around 4:40 because I wasn't really satisfied with the 4:50 from last week and I knew I could go faster," said Lienemann. "It was only my second time running (the mile) so I'm still trying to figure it out ... I was negative splitting with my last two laps being faster than the first two. So I know I could have gone faster at the start."

With Lienemann running the mile, Jachob Wiedeburg took on the 800 and finished second with Brody McKnight two places back in fourth.

The Raiders boys picked up their other two wins in the relays. The 4x800 team, which this week included Wiedeburg, McKnight, Lienemann and Logan Uhlir, put in another strong performance after setting meet records the past two weeks. The Raiders finished comfortably in front of runner-up McCook.

Michael Banaszak, Alex Linneman, Lienemann and Hunter Secrest looked fast in the 4x400. However, the baton exchange between Linneman and Lienemann was dropped at the start of the third leg. Lienemann and Secrest gobbled back a large chunk of the lost ground, but came up a few yards short. Secrest also had an effective open 400 as he finished in fifth.

Meanwhile, Banaszak (200 meters), Coby Haas (200), Josh Schaub (400) and Wiedeburg (800) teamed up to take down the competition in the seldom-run medley relay.

In the girls' competition, the sprinters had another strong performance with Kelly Von Seggern finishing second in the 100. Sara Von Seggern was fifth while Gabbie Addleman just missed a medal in seventh. Addleman fared better in her specialty, the 100-meter hurdles with a fourth-place medal.

The boys also had two medalists in the 100 with Linneman getting second and Chance Anglin scoring in sixth.

"I'm still injured from last year with a toe injury, but I'm doing fine with it," said Kelly Von Seggern. "I'm pretty pleased with the time but I think I could have run a little faster if it wasn't for the cold."

Added Ganser, "All of our 100 kids ran well today."

Sara Von Seggern also scored Raiders points in the 200 by getting the bronze. The Sidney girls doubled up in the 400 with Preslie Allen crossing in third with Genessa Schilz two spots back. Allen was sixth in the mile. Jami Flores helped the Sidney cause by entering the 800 and getting third.

Allen and Schilz joined with Nalalie Radcliffe and Abby Heller to finish a close second in the 4x400 relay. Radcliffe, a freshman, also landed a personal best in the long jump for third. Savanna Rosenbaum, a consistent performer in the high jump, was fourth with a leap that was equal to the second-place finisher.

On a day when both the girls' and boys' pole vault records were broken, freshman Derek Robb held his own by taking sixth. In the long jump, Linneman was a little short of his personal-best in finishing fifth with a jump of just over 20 feet. Linneman has been working on a new run up the past couple of weeks that helped him go beyond 21 feet at Mitchell last week.

The Raiders' next three meets will be at Scottsbluff. On April 24, Sidney competes in the Scottsbluff Twilight Meet at 12:30 p.m. Four days later, the Best of the West will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the conference meet on May 1 set to start at 11 a.m.
