Red Raider golfers take 3rd in Scottsbluff

SCOTTSBLUFF – With Nate Dvorak carding his second straight 80 and three Red Raiders breaking 85 for the first time this season, the Sidney High School golf team finished third in the Scottsbluff Invite at Scotts Bluff Country Club on Monday.

Laramie (Wyo.) took 323 strokes to edge out Cheyenne Central by a stroke. The Sidney total was 337. Host Scottsbluff, considered a strong contender for the District B-4 championship, brought only one varsity player as most of the team was at a school event in Florida.

The score turned in by Dvorak was good enough for a seventh-place finish in the individual standings. John Murdock IV of Laramie took top honors with a 1-over-par 73, while Kort Steele of North Platte and Cheyenne Central's Jared Edeen shot 77s to tie for second. The other Raiders scores included Ryan Birner (82), Brady Radcliffe (84), Connor Dormann (91) and Garrett Wamsley (99).

The Sidney junior varsity was led by Cole Westfall's 88 as the Raiders finished in second overall in Division II. The junior varisity squad also included Jake Burke (93), Elliot Jones (100), Montana Morrison (103) and Seth McMillen (132).

While Dvorak was pounding his driver well most of the day, he struggled on occasion with his approach shots to the green. His round suffered the most damage after he double-bogeyed two consecutive holes – 11 and 12. His fate was sealed on the 11th hole after his driver let him down for one of the few times during his round.

"I hit a quack hook off the (11th) tee, and then on 12, I ended up on some straw with mud underneath. I ended up swinging right under the ball," Dvorak said. "I'm close, but I need to clean up the little things. My distance control wasn't very good today. I have to hit more greens in regulation to take the pressure off my short game."

Birner completed another steady round, though he was surprised to discover how much scrambling he had to do.

"The coaches wanted us to keep track of how many fairways and greens we hit and I only ended up with about four or five of each," Birner said. "I was surprised how much scrambling I had to do, but fortunately, I was getting up and down well today."

On the 10th hole, however, Birner split the fairway with his driver and and stuck his iron shot about 20 feet from the pin and wound up with a routine par 4. His scrambling skills came to the fore on the next hole as he hit a tree about 70 yards off the tee. He managed to keep his composure and saved a bogey – and almost parred the hole.

Radcliffe's round was highlighted by birdies at 13 and 15. With the shotgun start, Radcliffe began his day on 15 with a birdie. On No. 13, his second-to-last hole, he drained a putt of about 20 feet into the center of the cup after reaching the green in regulation.

"I had a bad stretch when I got an eight on the first, a bogey on the second and a five on the par-3 third," Radcliffe said. "My driver was a little off. I didn't miss most fairways by a lot, but on every hole I seemed to be just a few feet or inches into the rough."

The Raiders will travel the road to Chadron on Thursday for the Western Conference Tournament. The players are scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m.
