WESTERN CONFERENCE MEET: Red Raiders sweep conference crowns

Sidney collected seven 1st-place finishes at meet

SCOTTSBLUFF – The Sidney Red Raiders track teams – boys and girls – are the champions of the Western Conference.

Led by event wins by Jake Heeren, Alex Linneman and the 4x800-relay team at Bearcat Stadium in Scottsbluff Friday, the boys reigned supreme atop the the Western Conference after accumulating 158 points to easily out point runner up Scottsbluff's 124. The complete scoring inlcuded Alliance (105.5), Mitchell (102.5), Gering (83.5) and Chadron (62.5).

The Sidney girls were powered by four event winners inlcuding Savanna Rosenbaum, Kelly Von Seggern, Gabbie Addleman and the 4x100 team to edge out second place Scottsbluff 156.5 to 154. The field was rounded out by Mitchell (117.5), Gering (92.5), Alliance (78.5) and Chadron (36).

Rosenbaum posted the Raiders first win of the day for the girls when her leap of 5 feet was enough to subdue the field in the high jump. Rosenbaum has placed at every meet this year and finds herself in good form in the season's final weeks.

"The part that I feel good about is that I've been getting five feet on my first attempt," Rosenbaum said. "I really do want to get 5-2, but if I keep staying consistent that will give me a better chance for a run at districts and state. Right now, we think it's my timing over the bar. I think I collapse on it too soon and that's what we have to work on."

Rosenbaum was joined in the winners circle by Von Seggern who beat the Bearcats' Shanell Primes by a whisker in the 100-meter dash. Her time of 12.72 gave her just a .01 second advantage at the finish line. The Raiders sprinters dominated the finals as four of the eight qualifiers hailed from Sindey. Addleman finished third, Sara Von Seggern fourth and Emily Mika seventh.

As for Addleman, she has been breaking personal bests with regularity of late in the 100-meter hurdles. After missing much of last season due to a back injury, she has erased any doubt she is back in peak form. Her time of 15.84, another lifetime best, was nearly a half-second faster than Kyra Willats of Scottsbluff.

But the Lady Raiders sprinters weren't finished. Kelly Von Seggern, Addleman, Natalie Radcliffe and Sara Von Seggern pooled their talents to edge out Mitchell in the 4x100-meter relay. The 4x400 relay lost all chance when the baton was dropped on the first exchange.

"It's not a P.R., but it's one of our best times," said Sara Von Seggern, who ran the anchor leg in the 4x100. "Mitchell is always tough so one of our goals is always to beat them. Our handoffs have been rough up until now and today they were crisp and that's a big part of it."

The freshmen quartet of Charlie Brockhaus, Chantal Riggs, Julia Evertson and Kara Birner continue to impress in the 3,200-meter relay as it finished second. Brockhaus and Riggs also both placed in the mile. In the two mile, Erin Lindeman scored third-place points.

The first to earn gold for the boys was Heeren who was much the best in the shot put. Heeren was nearly nine feet ahead of runner up Isaac De Los Santos of Scottsbluff. Heeren's outstanding season includes no meet in which he has missed the top three.

Linneman chalked up his win in the long jump as he was the only one in the field to exceed 21 feet. As usual, Jackson Dickerson of Chadron was in the hunt for gold, but fell short of Linneman by just 1 1/2 inches.

The boys relay win came in the 4x800 after they shuffled the deck slightly from past meets. Jachob Wiedeburg, who usually runs the lead-off leg, instead ran anchor. Brody McKnight led off and gave the Raiders a lead they never surrendered. Logan Uhlir and Brenner Keane finished their legs ahead of all challengers as well.

In the open 800, Sidney placed three runners with Hayden Lienemann leading the way in second. Logan Uhlir finished fourth with Brody McKnight .22 seconds behind in fifth. Wiedeburg, despite being bothered by a cold, finished a comfortable second in the mile while Keane backed up the Raiders effort with a fifth-place finish. Ryan Aurich scored more points for Sidney in the distance races with his fifth in the two mile.

The Raiders 4x100 team of Derek Robb, Michael Banaszak, Chance Anglin and Linneman missed first by .76 seconds after their initial baton hand off did not go smoothly. The Raiders proved their strength in the sprints, however, by placing three runners in the open 100 including Banaszak (third), Robb (fourth) and Anglin (sixth).

In the 200, Linneman finished second and Michael Muggli fifth. The Raiders also placed multiple boys in the open 400 with Lienemann crossing second and Secrest sixth.

Though Preslie Allen was not able to mine any gold at Scottsbluff, she again picked up big points in the middle-distance races. She was second in both the 400 and 800 meters. Genessa Schilz, who turned an ankle last week in practice, was back on the track to take fourth in the 400.

A familiar sight in the field events this season for the Lady Raiders has been their consistent placings in the pole vault. Former state qualifier Jami Flores led the way in second. Jolene Oliverius and Jasmine Jallen were right there in third and fourth.

In the boys pole vault, Derek Robb took a big leap forward by topping his previous best by a foot. He easily cleared the bar at 12-06 and came close on his initial attempt at 13 feet. Robb may have been helped by a little added rest he was given after running the 100-meter preliminaries.

"I was going to come in at 10-6, but they were at 10-6 when I got back from the 100," Robb said. "So Coach (Matt McKay) just passed me to 11 so that I could get some rest. Maybe I'll be coming in at higher heights now that my P.R. is a little higher."

Freshman Mitch Porter also erased his previous best by clearing the bar at 5-8 in the high jump. His effort was good enough for second place.

In the boys' discus, Brian Rolls gained another bronze for the boys with a toss of better than 140 feet. Annalise Lecher, meanwhile, added a few inches to her previous best for the girls in the discus and finished second.

"Sometimes it's just little increments, but I'm going in the right direction," Lecher said.

Sidney's youth movement was evident in the long-jump pit as Radcliffe's leap was good enough for second while Evertson placed sixth.

Next up for the Raiders are the Bayard B-C-D and Cheyene County Invitational hosted by Leyton at Sidney on Friday. Raiders head coach John Ganser said he'll send athletes to both meets.
