BAYARD B-C-D INVITE: Red Raider boys, girls finish atop standings

Final relay of day helps Sidney catch up with Mitchell

BAYARD, Neb. – With the Sidney boys' track team trailing by five points entering the final event of Friday's annual Bayard B-C-D track meet, it was up to the 4x400 relay team to make up the difference.

Though they had a slight baton bobble in one exchange, the Raiders' second-place finish in the 4x400 forged a tie for first with Mitchell at 107 points. Bridgeport – a Class C team – took the third spot with 91.5 points.

The Sidney girls' team, meanwhile, needed no such late heroics to win their meet as they easily outpaced the competition with 152 points. Bridgeport was a distant second with 71 points. Host Bayard edged out Alliance for third, 69.5 to 65.5.

While the Creek Valley Storm sent most of its team to the Cheyenne County Invite in Sidney, head coach Bill Wilber brought along a small contingent of his most accomplished athletes to Bayard. Sophomore Jessie Straber topped the Storm point earners as she picked up a pair of second-place finishes in field events.

The Raiders also split their squad as head coach John Ganser left a group of his team in Sidney. The Sidney teams both finished in fourth place at the Cheyenne County Invite.

The Sidney boys' 4x400 team included Hayden Lienemann, Alex Linneman, Hunter Secrest and Michael Banaszak. Before the race, they knew they had to run a good race.

"We knew we were five points behind so we had to run a good race to win the meet," Lienemann said.

The Raiders finished second by 0.67 seconds to Hemingford while Mitchell was fifth. Despite the baton bobble during the one exchange, the Raiders recovered quickly.

One of the highlights of the day for both the Raiders and Storm was the battle in the girls' high jump. With both Straber and Sidney's Savanna Rosenbaum consistently clearing five feet of late, it could have gone either way. Rosenbaum eventually settled the matter when she cleared 5-2 for the first time since early this season.

Straber had a close battle going in the triple jump also when she was edged out by Aspen Reifschneider of Mitchell for the crown. The difference between the two was just over six inches.

The Raiders' girls were again strong in the pole vault as they took second, third and fourth places. Jolene Oliverius finished atop her teammates with Jami Flores third and Jasmine Jallen fourth. Payje Misegadis of Creek Valley ended the event in sixth place with teammate Sami Schmid one place back, though both cleared the same height.

The event winners for the Sidney boys were Alex Linneman in the 200 meters, Lienemann in the 800, Jachob Wiedeburg in the mile and Jake Heeren in the shot put. Heeren again tossed the rock more than 54 feet.

All of the Raiders' relay teams finished second. Derek Robb, Linneman, Banaszak and Chance Anglin finished 0.14 seconds behind Mitchell in the 4x100. In the 4x800, Brody McKnight, Jarod Luptak, Logan Uhlir and Brenner Keane were 0.43 seconds from winner Bridgeport.

In the open 800, Lienemann not only ran a personal best with a 1:59.40, he also established a meet record. Uhlir aided the Raiders cause with his fifth-place finish.

"I had a fresh open 800 today, I was going for it," Lienemann said. "It was a little windy, but I did what I could."

Wiedeburg also had designs on a new personal best, but came up a little short despite winning the event by a wide margin. Keane backed up the Wiedeburg effort by taking the fifth spot.

"My goal was to go under 4:35," said Wiedeburg of his 1,600. "I was really hoping I would have someone pushing me but I was by myself from the beginning. Today wasn't the day to break 4:35, but I'm happy that it was enough to win the day."

Besides Rosenbaum, the Raiders were powered by three other individual winners. All three of their relay teams also struck gold.

Kelly Von Seggern topped the field in the 100-meter dash, Preslie Allen took the field in the 800 and Addleman edged Chellani Parriott of Bayard in the 100 hurdles.

The sprint relay team included Abby Heller, Addleman and the Von Seggern sisters, Sara and Kelly. Allen, Genessa Schilz, Natalie Radcliffe and Heller beat the field in the 1,600-meter relay. Radcliffe also had another good day in the long jump as she finished third. In the 4x800, Charlie Brockhaus, Chantal Riggs, Kara Birner and Julia Evertson finished nearly 10 seconds in front of the field.

"I knew I had tough competition with (Aspen Reifschneider of Mitchell) so I really wanted to beat her," said Sara Von Seggern, who earned a personal-best time (26.99) to edge Reifschneider by 0.05 seconds. "I need to work on my starts out of the blocks and just keep pushing the entire way."

Addleman, who also finished second in the 100, continues to be the one to beat in District B-6 in the low hurdles. This time she won by just 0.02 seconds. She has twice broken 16 seconds in recent meets.

"I guess I have to try and think about getting closer to 15.5 or at least that area," said Addleman of the hurdles. "When I get to state, well, if I get there, I would have really good competition and should help push me."

To qualify for state, athletes will be looking to finish in the top three at districts. The Raiders will travel to Ogallala on Thursday for their district meet, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
