Sidney Legion teams open with victories

After twice being rained out of their home opener last weekend, the Sidney American Legion program opened up its 2015 campaign in Gordon with a junior-senior doubleheader sweep over the Regulators.

The Juniors took the field in the opener and won by the count of 14-4 while the seniors completed the sweep with a 19-3 victory. Both contests went four innings because of the mercy rule.

The juniors put the Regulators on their heels quickly with five runs in the top of the first inning. Zach Means, Brett Jaggers and Garrett Langrell led the offense with two hits apiece, while leadoff hitter Mitch Rolls collected three walks. Jaggers added three RBIs to his night’s work.

Means started the game on the hill and went 2 2/3 innings to pick up the victory, with Connor Langrell hurling the final 1 1/3 innings. Means surrendered two runs on a pair of hits and four walks while striking out seven. Langrell also allowed a pair of runs while giving up a hit, a walk and striking out three.

“We made some mental mistakes which would be expected this time of year but we executed well offensively,” said assistant coach Tommy Arellano. “Zach pitched a solid game after taking an inning to get warmed up. He also showed good power at the plate.”

In the nightcap, the Sidney Seniors were pitched to victory by Kyle Burton, with Jason Hagerman pitching the final inning. Lane Harvey, Jaggers, Burton and Jake Heeren led the offensive parade with three hits apiece.

Harvey and Heeren each had a double, while Jaggers had a pair of extra-base hits.

Sidney takes on Hershey in a junior-senior doubleheader tonight (Wednesday) in the home opener. The juniors get the action started at Legion Field at 5 p.m.
