Sidney Legion teams post sweep of Gordon

The Sidney American Legion squads made a clean sweep of the Gordon Regulators at Legion Park on Wednesday night with the juniors taking the opener 7-3 and the seniors winning the nightcap by the count of 9-1 in five innings.

Sidney pitchers Zach Holtz, Brett Jaggers and Jackson Witt combined to stymie the Post 34 juniors in the opener. Holtz – the starter – picked up the win after going three innings while giving up one run on three hits and three walks. Gordon travelled to Sidney with just nine players who played in both contests.

Offensively, the Sidney juniors (6-4) put together 11 hits with Jaggers leading the way with a pair. Byron Rowley smacked a double in his only at bat, while Garrett Langrell, Keaton Wakefield and Mitch Rolls provided Sidney's other extra-base knocks. Connor Langrell and Zack Means each had a pair of RBIs.

The seniors (5-8) banged out nine hits with Bradey Holtz and Kyle Burton leading the charge with three and two hits respectively. Five seniors drove home a run for Sidney including Wakefield, Holtz, Zack Means, Arik Doty and Ben Goble. Additionally, it made several strong plays in the field and just one error.

"Pretty much all year we've played well defensively and then we might have a few blowups," said Post #17 head coach Ray Witt. "Most of the time we have been solid in the field though. I'm really proud of the way they're playing defense right now."

Jason Hagerman went the distance for the win and had a one-hitter going into the fifth. Gordon found some life in the fifth, however, and struck for three hits to ruin Hagerman's shutout bid. He threw just 58 pitches that included 38 strikes. He walked two and struck out a pair.

Sidney put Gordon back on its heels from the first inning by posting seven runs. Cleanup hitter Means drove in the first run after Wakefield and Holtz had singled before him. The Holtz hit was a perfectly executed bunt between the pitcher and first baseman. Two hard shots to center accounted for the other two other hits by Holtz.

"He had a pretty decent curve ball, but I'm seeing the ball well," Holtz said.

Burton followed the Means RBI with one of his own on a rope to left field.

"I have a different mindset where I'm just trying to make contact now rather than trying to hit the ball over the fence," Burton said. "I've been making solid contact more often lately, so I think it's working out for me."

When the first-inning dust had finally settled, Post #17 had sent 12 hitters to the plate and banged out six hits. Rolls and Holtz each scored in the third inning to round out the Sidney scoring. Rolls was driven home by Holtz, who later scored on a wild pitch.

In the juniors game, Sidney took the lead with three runs in the first after Wakefield opened the inning with a double to right. Wakefield, Connor Langrell and Jaggers all scored in the first. Post #17 added a single run in the third when Doty scored. Rolls and Connor Langrell each scored a run in the fourth while Rolls crossed the plate again in the sixth.

Both Sidney squads take on Class A Westco at Legion Field on Thursday night.
