Kiwanis awards scholarships to three local students

The local Kiwanis International club awarded $500 scholarships to three recent graduates Thursday afternoon during one of its monthly meetings.

Kiwanis is an international organization with more than 600,000 members. The club and its many communities annually raise more than $100 million and dedicate more than 18 million volunteer hours to strengthen communities and serve children.

Established in 1915, Kiwanis focuses on changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time. Members will raise funds for various causes and participate in service projects that enhance their communities.

The Sidney Kiwanis presented scholarships to Jesse Buss, a recent Peetz High School graduate, and to Andrew Myers and Raine Gartner, both 2015 Sidney High School graduates. The $500 will go toward each students' first year of college.

Buss intends to study secondary elementary at WNCC's Sidney campus before going on to Chadron State College. Myers said he plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and major in mechanical engineering. Gartner will attend Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., where she will study business management.

According to Becky Rezac of the Sidney Kiwanis, there were more than 20 applicants for this year's scholarships.

"We had several students apply, and this year was really tough trying to narrow down the winners and figure out the tiebreakers," Rezac said.

Gary Hawkins, president of the Sidney Kiwanis, said the money for the scholarships are raised during Oktoberfest as well as from the downtown flag display contract.

"Our main goal is to donate back to the youth," Hawkins said. "We've donated to CASA, the Lodgepole Valley Youth Camp, Cool Kids Club and to the new pool project."
