Dormann paces locals at Jr. Am

KIMBALL – Alex Schaake of Omaha won his second straight Nebraska Junior Amateur Championship on Thursday as he fired a 74 at West Winds Golf Course in Kimball to overtake second-round leader Koy Potthoff of Scottsbluff.

Schaake finished with a 54-hole total of 219 to edge Pothoff and Omaha’s Nolan Maschka by two strokes.

Among the locals, Connor Dormann led three of his Sidney High School teammates with a three-day total of 252 after a final round 85. Dormann opened the tournament on Tuesday with an 85 and carded an 82 on Wednesday.

Nate Dvorak was 10 strokes behind Dormann after rounds of 86-86-90 left him at 262. Two other Red Raiders, Garrett Wamsley and Cole Westfall ended up at 275 and 283, respectively.

Wamsley matched his first day score of 94 on Thursday after carding an 87 on Wednesday. Westfall improved his score each round as he went 99-94-90.

Dormann’s final round included a birdie on the par-5 11th after starting on the 10th tee. Though Dormann struggled through the latter part of his opening nine holes, he scored a 40 on the front nine despite carding a double bogey on the first.

Dvorak had a promising start to his round as he was just three over after 11 holes, which included a birdie on the par-4 fourth. Dvorak struggled through holes 3, 4 and 5, however, as he went 11 over during the three-hole stretch.

Wamsley had his best run on the front nine as he went one under for the opening five holes of the front nine. Westfall, meanwhile boosted his score over his final three holes by going even par, which included a birdie on the seventh hole.
