Veterans State Cemetery to commemorate World War II anniversary

This Sunday, Aug. 16, has been designated as the day to commemorate of 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

The Spirit of ’45 organization has invited national, state and tribal veteran cemeteries to be a participant in the “International Tribute” scheduled for the weekend. Wreath laying ceremonies will begin at Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines and continue in a westerly direction around the world.

After events in Europe and throughout the U.S., a final garland will be placed at the National Memorial of the Pacific Cemetery in Hawaii.

Invited by the Veterans State Cemetery at Alliance Foundation, World War II veterans from the 11 western counties in Nebraska will attend a “tribute” at Nebraska’s State Veterans Cemetery, located at 2610 County Road 57, Alliance.

The program will include: patriotic music, guest speakers, formal recognition to all World War II veterans attending, and closing with the laying of a wreath on the “Unfinished Grave.”
