King's Daughters kick off donation drive

The Wide Awake Circle of the King's Daughters in Sidney, which was founded in 1891, is preparing for its annual donation drive.

The charity provides various types of assistance for those in the Sidney area. The King's Daughters have contributed to rent, utilities and medical bills.

Members of the King's Daughters also make baskets for new mothers that include onesies, diapers, blankets and socks and shoes. These baskets are then given to new mothers who might not have access to necessities for a new baby. The group also leaves baskets at the hospital.

On Monday afternoon, the group met at St. Patrick's Parish to begin sending out its annual donation letter asking various individuals in the community to contribute to its efforts.

Christmas is the Wide Awake Circle's busiest time of year, during which the group gives gifts to Western Heritage senior apartment residents, delivers poinsettias to people who've lost a loved one during the year and prepares and delivers cookie trays.

The group's biggest project of the year is providing Christmas food baskets to area families. The Wide Awake Circle has been doing this for more than a century.

The King's Daughters receives a lot of assistance from other community members and businesses. The group gives about 130 baskets at the Legion Park shelter house besides the ones that they deliver.
