Sidney golfers take second at Chadron Invitational

The Sidney Lady Raiders golf team continued its strong play on Tuesday as it finished runner-up to Scottsbluff at the Chadron Invite.

The Raiders finished with their best team score of the season as their top four scorers totaled 375. The Lady Bearcats came in at 362.

Sidney also had three of its players finish in the medals. Sophomore Emma Alexander’s 87 earned her a third-place medal while Megan Neal took sixth with a 90 and Rachel Blauert was seventh at 91.

In the junior varsity match, the Raiders’ Dru Rowan finished second.

Sidney is back on the links Thursday when it travels to the Scenic Knolls Golf Course for the Mitchell Invite. The players are scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m.

Creek Valley splits matches at Morrill triangular

The Creek Valley Storm volleyball team split a pair of matches at a Morrill triangular Tuesday night.

The Storm opened up with a 2-1 loss to Arthur County (2-2) by set scores of 25-21, 19-25 and 17-25. Creek Valley rebounded in its second match against host Morrill in another three setter. The Storm topped the Lions 25-20, 16-25 and 25-19.

The Straber sisters, Jessie and Joey, led the way for the Storm hitters in the opener as they had eight and seven kills respectively. Payje Misegadis pounded home five kills. Setter Samantha Schmid aided her teammates with 22 assists.

On defense, six Storm players had double-digit digs including Misegadis (19), Joey Straber (17), Schmid (14), Chandra Smith (14), Katie Burch (13) and Jessie Straber (11). Misegadis and Joey Straber did not make an error on the service line while Schmid made just one in 12 attempts.

“There was no intensity in this match,” said Storm head coach Roger Behrends. “We need to learn how to show up and play hard every match.”

The Storm picked up the pace against Morrill with a well-balanced offensive attack led by Misegadis and Jessie Straber’s seven kills each. Smith added six kills and Joey Straber four.

Freshman Faith Michelman’s effort with her serve produced just one error in 16 attempts. Joey Straber was again perfect with her serve in seven attempts. Schmid, who had 23 assists, was flawless also at the line in nine attempts.

Misegadis (29), Joey Straber (21) and Jessie Straber (20) led the team in digs.

“We played much better in this match,” Behrends said. “The intensity level was much higher and I saw some improvement.”

Creek Valley will take to the court again on Saturday at the Garden County Tournament at 10 a.m.

Lady Coyotes dominate district opener

The Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes (2-0) volleyball team had little trouble in its first district contest as it swept past the Minatare Lady Indians (0-3) in three sets.

Potter-Dix won by set scores of 25-9, 25-5 and 25-5.

Alexus Rozelle led a balanced offensive attack with six of the Coyotes 22 kills on the night. Dawson Sharman and Audrey Juelfs each had four kills while Trinity Langley added three. Anna McLaughlin and Regyn Hicks chipped in with a pair apiece. Setter Lanie Thies aided the hitters with 20 assists.

On the service line, Hicks and Juelfs combined for just one error in 43 service attempts. Hicks served at 100 percent in 21 attempts.

The defensive effort included a block apiece from McLaughlin, Rozelle, Langley and Hicks. Juelfs and Thies topped the squad with nine digs each, while Hicks had seven.

The Coyotes will try to keep their perfect record intact when they travel to Mitchell to take on a pair of C1 schools on Thursday. The triangular, scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., will include Kimball.
