Earl H. Geu

1923 to 2015

Earl H. Geu, 91 of Sidney, passed away at the Sidney Regional Medical Center Extended Care on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 18 in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Bradley Heinecke officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Earl's name to the Lutheran Hour or the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture. Earl Herman Geu, the son of Joachim Henry and Emma Emelia (Tietjen) Geu, was born on Oct. 14, 1923 on the family farm north of Sunol in Cheyenne County. He attended rural school at District 39 and graduated from Sidney High School in 1941. On Dec. 20, 1948, Earl was united in marriage to Evelyn June Cartwright at the Methodist Church in Whitney, Neb. Earl was a lifelong farmer and rancher in Cheyenne County, residing on a farm two miles from his birthplace. He served twenty-nine years on the Board of Directors of the Wheatbelt Public Power District; thirty-five years on the Board of Directors of the Farmers Coop Grain Company; thirty-nine years on the Cheyenne County School Reorganization Committee; and served forty-five years as usher, elder and Board Member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Earl was a gentle man with a firm handshake and friendly smile who loved a good joke.

Survivors include his wife: Evelyn of Sidney; (3) children: Pamela Lay of Hastings, Jan Thelen and husband Steve of Lincoln and Thomas Geu and wife Carol of Vermillion, S.D .; (5) grandchildren: Cody Lay and wife Elizabeth of Columbus, Rikki Lay of Lincoln, Andrew Thelen of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Joanie Thelen and fiancé Jack Huebner of Kansas City, Mo. and Taylor Geu of Gambier, OH; (1) great-grandson: Gavin Lay of Columbus; (1) sister: Arlene Mathewson and husband Rodney of Sidney; (2) sisters-in-law: Amy Ann Geu of Sidney and Rosemarie Geu of Ft. Collins and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents: Joachim and Emma Geu; brothers: Henry J. Geu of Sidney and Harold L. Geu of Fort Collins and an infant sister: Wilma Geu.
