'For Peetz Sake Days' ready to get underway

The town of Peetz, Colo., will be celebrating the community's annual For Peetz Sake Days this weekend in conjunction with the high school's homecoming. A pep rally, food, games and a parade are on tap for the event.

Serving as the 2015 Parade Marshals are August and Marlene Buss. The couple has lived in the Peetz area for most of their of lives.

August was born on the family farm at Peetz and graduated from Peetz High. Marlene was born on her family farm two miles south of August, but moved to Texas when she was 3.

Because their parents were close friends, they were able to keep in contact throughout their younger years.

They married on June 8, 1952, and lived in Sidney until August entered the Army. After living in California and August going overseas, in 1954 they moved to August's birthplace. Ten years, later, the couple bought Marlene's old home and moved two miles down the road.

August retired from a sugar beet company in Lovell, Wyo. The Buss's moved back to Peetz and are living in the house that Marlene's mom owned. They raised four children: Edith, Sid, Chuck and Jody. They also have 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

The Buss's have been active in scouting. Marlene was a den mother for 16 years as well as an assistant leader for girl scouts and served on the troop committee for 20 years. She was also a member of the Farm Women's Club. August was a scout master for four years and has been a Lions member for 45 years.

Both are members of the Peetz United Methodist Church.

The two-day town celebration will kick off at 3 p.m. Friday with a bake sale and craft show at the community center. This year there will be 15 vendors in the craft show featuring furniture, handmade glass jewelry, candles and homemade soaps to name a few. The bake sale and craft sale will take place both days.

A community pot luck-style hog roast, sponsored by the Lions Club, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Guests are asked to bring a side or or desserts.

Following the hog roast will be a community pep rally to support Peetz High's student-athletes.

Concluding Friday's festivities will be a bon fire with games.

The event will continue bright and early on Saturday with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m.

At 10 a.m., the annual parade will take place down Main Street.

Children in pre-school to second grade will be able to play games and other activities at the Peetz Park from 10:30-11:15 a.m.

Lunch will be a hamburger fry from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that will help support the Youth Sports League.

The Peetz Bulldogs will face Briggsdale at 1 p.m. The 2015 homecoming royalty will be crowned at halftime of the football game.

This year's homecoming candidates include: Garrin Cox, Shawn Bernhardt, Jordan Nelson, Mikenna Curlee, Jodie Schumacher and Tyra Foreman. This year's attendants are Janda Ommen and Colton Segelke.

The volleyball game, also against Briggsdale, will begin at 3:30 p.m. It is encouraged by the school to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

The celebration will wrap up with a public dance at Peetz Hot Spot and Smokehouse from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
