Cool Kids Club celebrates 'Lights on Afterschool' event

Sidney's Cool Kids Club/No Limits celebrated its 14th annual "Lights on Afterschool" event at North Elementary on Monday evening.

Lights on Afterschool is a nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs. The event was organized by the Afterschool Alliance in October 2000, to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things.

Sidney's Cool Kids Club originated in October 2001 after school administrators from Sidney and Chadron wrote a joint grant to begin a before, after and summer school program in their communities.

This program provides support for working families by ensuring that children are safe and productive when the school day ends.

Cool Kids Club includes students in grades kindergarten through 3rd grade, and No Limits provides afterschool homework help to students in middle school and high school.

Cool Kids Club program director Coleen Langdon said there are about 130 students in Cool Kids Club this year.

The event included a free soup dinner for students and parents, a carmel apple station, science experiments and a room for decorating pumpkins and gourds that the Cool Kids Club/No Limits grew over the summer.

The Cool Kids Club was also presented a $1,000 donation check from Great Western Bank in Sidney.
