Leyton downs Sedgwick County in 4 sets

The Leyton High volleyball team received strong efforts from several of its starters en route to a 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25-16 victory over Sedgwick (Colo.) County on Tuesday night.

Leyton improved to 15-6 this season, while Sedgwick fell to 3-12.

Diedra Waite led the way for the Lady Warriors with 11 kills, 22 digs and six blocks. Kristine Barnett added 10 kills and 25 digs.

“We played a fairly solid match,” said Leyton head coach Jodi Craig. “We picked up our intensity in the third and fourth sets, which helped us execute successfully.”

Cheyenne Nickel added nine kills, seven blocks and 11 digs for Leyton, and Natalie Cruise chipped in seven kills and 33 digs. Setter Taylor Berner recorded 33 assists 16 digs and six aces.

The Lady Warriors are back in action on Saturday at the Minuteman Athletic Conference tournament at Banner County High School. Leyton is seeded second and opens play against No. 7 Banner Co. at 12:45 p.m.

The other teams are: Potter-Dix (No. 1 seed), Creek Valley (No. 3), South Platte (No. 4), Bayard (No. 5), Garden County (No. 6) and Minatare (No. 8).

The semifinals are set for 2 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., with the championship match slated for 6 p.m.
