Cancer survivors, patients invited to enjoy spa day at WNCC

October is a time to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month and celebrate the lives of those who have overcome the disease or are still battling it.

Alice Macht, a cosmetology professor at Western Nebraska Community College's Sidney campus, found a way to give back to the community by hosting a free spa day for cancer survivors, as well as those still going through treatment.

The cosmetology program at WNCC in Sidney will be hosting its second annual cancer survivor spa day.

Macht started the event in response to her own history with cancer and inspiration from volunteerism with events such as Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society.

"Usually we have a waiting list for appointments, but we have more students this year so we have extra openings," Macht said.

The cosmetology students will be providing the services.

"The students love this opportunity. They get to hear experiences of the survivors or those still going through treatment, and it's very rewarding for the students because it does affect their hearts," she added.

Locals will be able to enjoy a pedicure, manicure, or facial and scalp treatment for free on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Appointments can be made from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m to 3:30 p.m.
