The cosmetology department at Western Nebraska Community College's Sidney campus was plastered with pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month as well as their annual free spa day to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors as well as those still fighting the disease.
The cosmetology students in the program provided pedicures, manicures, facials and scalp treatments to pamper their special guests.
Some of those attending had never experienced the services offered at the event. Bev Struckmeyer, who came to Sidney from Holyoke, Colo., with her husband to take part in the spa day, was able to receive a manicure from her grandson who is in the cosmetology program.
"I think this is just neat," Struckmeyer said. "Especially since my grandson is doing it."
According to WNCC's campus director Paula Abbott, a cancer survivor herself, this is time to give back to the community as well as family members who have fought or are still battling cancer.
"It is such an emotional day," Abbott said. "You celebrate life. Whether you've just been diagnosed or 26 years out, you just celebrate life. It brings everyone together and the students get so excited about this event. I just love this day, it really is very powerful."
Besides the spa treatments, guests received goodies, flowers and refreshments.
