Peetz tops Cheraw, makes quarterfinals

The Peetz High School football team took to the road Saturday for its playoff game and came home successful – and with a state quarterfinal berth in hand.

The Bulldogs used a strong second half and a four-touchdown afternoon from Jordan Nelson to pull away and defeat Cheraw 41-20 in one of 16 Colorado 6-man cross-divisional games.

Those eight winners were reseeded over the weekend and will comprise this weekend's state quarterfinal field.

Peetz, which improved to 6-3, is seeded No. 5 and will square off against No. 4 Arickaree/Woodlin (8-1). A site and time will be announced by Tuesday.

Arickaree/Woodlin defeated Peetz, 58-50, in a regular-season game back on Sept. 4.

On Saturday, Nelson carried the ball 29 times for 211 yards and the four TDs. He also completed both of his pass attempts for 32 yards out of the backfield and contributed 18 tackles and a sack on defense.

Peetz quarterback Wolf Wenneker was 4 of 8 passing for 80 yards and a touchdown. He connected with Cole White for that score. White caught three passes on the afternoon for 82 yards.

Helmuth Wenneker had four rushes for 16 yards and scored the Bulldogs' other TD.

Defensively, Wolf Wenneker provided 18 tackles and a sack, Cody Wilson added 13 tackles and an interception and Garrin Cox had 13 tackles.

Peetz fell behind 8-0 after the opening quarter, but pulled ahead for the first time in the game in the second period and took a 20-14 lead into the intermission.

The Bulldogs put up a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to open up a 34-20 advantage heading into the final stanza. Peetz scored the lone TD in the final quarter to finish off the 41-20 win.

Cheraw completed its season with a 6-3 record.

Besides the Peetz-Arickaree/Woodline matchup, the other state quarterfinals are: No. 1 Kit Carson (9-0) vs. No. 8 Briggsdale (5-4), No. 2 Fleming (9-0) vs. No. 7 Hanover (8-1) and No. 3 Eads (8-1) vs. No. 6 Pawnee (6-2).
