Potter-Dix tops South Platte in straight sets

It only took three hard-fought sets to get there, but the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes varsity volleyball squad came out victorious against South Platte on Friday, beating the Blue Knights 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-22).

The match, played in Big Springs, was the final conference test for the Lady Coyotes before the start of playoffs this week. With the win, Potter-Dix finishes the regular season at 24-3 overall and 4-0 in District 11 standings.

According to Potter-Dix head coach Sarah Dvorak, ending the regular season with a win was an important step forward for the Lady Coyotes.

“It was really good to end the regular season with a win over South Platte,” Dvorak said. “Their team really stepped up their game and I was very impressed with them. They played so well, it upped our team’s game as well. Our girls were very excited to get this win and move into the playoffs.”

When it came to being a scoring and defensive powerhouse, Dawson Sharman led Potter-Dix in three statistical areas; the junior Coyote logged seven kills at the net on 15 attempts, all while managing 11 service receptions and 15 digs against the Knights.

While Dvorak was effusive about the way her entire team played, she added that Sharman makes a big impact for the team, in ways that transcend the theatrics on the court.

“(Sharman) is one of our three captains and she is probably one of our better all-around players and she always shows up to compete,” Dvorak added. “She rarely has an off game and is probably the biggest member of the team that helps keeps us motivated and together when we have adversity.”

In addition to her other stats, Sharman also recorded an ace in the game.

One of the best performances of the night for Potter-Dix also came from junior Lanie Thies with 15 assists and three service aces. Thies also logged three blocks.

A third junior for the Lady Coyotes, Alexus Rozelle, also led her team in blocks, with two solo and a pair of assists. She also added seven receptions and matched Thies in aces with three. Rozelle also matched up with senior Regyn Hicks in kills with five.

The Lady Coyotes continue their jaunt toward the hope for a state championship tonight as they travel to Bridgeport to face either Minatare or Banner County as the No. 1 seed in D2-11 subdistrict playoff action.
