School board adds day to 'spring break'

The Sidney School Board added a day to "spring break" for the 2016-17 school calendar at its regularly scheduled meeting held Monday night.

In a discussion of the 2016-17 school calendar, a day was added to what was formerly "Easter break" and its name was changed to "spring break." Sidney Superintendent Jay Ehler said this was done to accommodate a wide variety of families that live in the Sidney area. The 2016-2017 school calendar was approved.

The board discussion of the impending resignation of board member Janet Rosenbaum was tabled, as was the approval of a process to fill the empty board seat. The board will discuss the issue at its March meeting.

Also on Monday, a discussion of the payable bills and financial reports led to talks of budget saving ideas. All bills and financial reports were unanimously approved.

Also at the meeting, the board:

• Accepted Krissy Fry's resignation. Fry was a sixth grade teacher and Danz Team sponsor. She will be leaving the school system due to her husband's new job in Utah. "The last three years as a member of Sidney Public Schools has been both a blessing and a dream," Fry said.

• Saw Ehler present the printouts of Sidney Public Schools report cards. The report cards detail the acdemic statistics of the schools and are available at each school for the community.

• Honored Sidney students of the month at the meeting. They were: Joseph Konz, 7th grade; Sarah Wamsley, 8th grade; Johnny Hehnke, 9th grade, Charlie Brokhaus, 10th grade; Nathan Dvorak, 11th grade; and Ryan Briner, 12th grade.

• The next school board meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 14, at the administration building.
