Helen M. Pigg, 99 of Sidney, and former Bridgeport area resident, entered into her eternal rest at the Sidney Regional Medical Center Extended Care, Tuesday evening, Feb. 9, 2016.

Viewing will be from 1 to 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 15, at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel with cremation to follow. Private family inurnment in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Scottsbluff and Memorial Services will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made in Helen's name to the First Christian Church in Sidney and the First Baptist Church in Bridgeport.

Gehrig-Stitt Chapel & Cremation Service, LLC is in charge of Helen's care and funeral arrangements.

Helen Zimmerman was born in Beatrice to George and Isabel Zimmerman and lived on a farm with her older sister, Meredith. The girls later had a step-father Frank Cunningham and two step-brothers, Don and Cecil. The family bought a farm near Max, where she met and married a school teacher who was the only love of her life, and to this union they had two children, Roger and Roberta. Victor then taught in Cairo and toward the end of World War II, they worked at the Ordinance Plant at Grand Island, where Helen put seals on bombs and shells. After the war, they moved to Bridgeport where victor was the Elementary and Jr. High Principal and teacher. Helen worked alongside her husband doing custodial work at the school and always working other jobs to provide for her family. After the children were raised, she went to college and received her BA with Cum Laude Honors at the same time Victor received his Master's Degree. Helen taught in country school and then they moved to Eagle Butte, where they taught on the Indian Reservation, before moving to Hill City, where Victor served as Superintendent before returning to their home in Bridgeport to retire. They operated a lawn mowing business until Victor's health failed. As a widow, Helen later moved to Sidney to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law. Helen was blessed with good health until the age of 94 when she moved into an apartment and later to the Extended Care Facility.

Helen will be remembered for her beautiful voice, her gentle spirit and her love for gardening, cats and sharing. She longed to be with her Lord and is rejoicing in his presence.

Survivors include her son: Roger Pigg and wife Becky; daughter: Roberta Burr and husband Richard and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and extended family members.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister, Meredith Johnson, step-brothers: Don and Cecil, granddaughter, Linda Plett and son-in-law, Jerry Van Natter.
