Potter-Dix, Leyton and Creek Valley students qualify for state speech

Potter-Dix, Leyton win respective districts

Several Potter-Dix, Leyton and Creek Valley students will be moving on to the state speech championship next week after placing in the top three during the D1-6 and D2-6 District Speech Contest held Wednesday at Potter-Dix High School.

Champions for Potter-Dix in the District D2-6 contest were sophomore Audrey Juelfs in oral interpretation of poetry as well as in duet acting with freshman Brooke Moench. Junior Levi Kasten also won in entertainment speaking.

Also advancing to the state championship from Potter-Dix are junior John Herboldsheimer (second place in humorous interpretation of prose literature), junior Alana Thies (second place in serious interpretation of prose literature), junior Dawson Sharman (third place in serious interpretation of prose literature), freshman Brooke Moench (oral interpretation of poetry), senior Regyn Hicks (second place in persuasive speaking), freshman Sierra Wheelock (third place in entertainment speaking) and seniors Keverett Rusk and Justice Palmer (second place in duet acting).

The Potter-Dix oral interpretation of drama team, consisting of Rusk, Palmer, Hicks, Sharman and senior Sam Bogert, placed second and also qualified for the state championship.

Team results for District D2-6 placed Potter-Dix in first with a total score of 354 points. Hyannis placed second with 272 points, South Platte was third with 218 points and Sioux County missed a top three finish by one, with 217 points, and took fourth place.

In fifth place was Arthur County with 181 points, Cody-Kilgore finished in sixth place with 175 points, Banner County finished seventh with 74 points and Minatare had an eighth place finish with 49 points.

Last year at state, Potter-Dix tied for second as a team.

In the D1-6 contest, Leyton champions were senior Zachery Deal (extemporaneous speaking), senior Mikaela Franzen (oral interpretation of poetry) and the duet acting team of seniors Jessica Houk and Katelyn Higgins.

Other state qualifiers for Leyton were junior Aaron Schrotberger (second place in humorous interpretation of prose literature), junior Cheyenne Nickel (third place in serious interpretation of prose literature), senior Bailey Cooper (extemporaneous speaking), freshman Daniel Higgins (second place in persuasive speaking), freshman David George (second place in entertainment speaking), senior Caitlyn Deal (third place in informative public speaking) and the OID team of juniors Abbegail Draper, Kenneth Ernest and senior Katelyn Higgins (second place).

For Creek Valley, the duet acting team of seniors Nash Leef and Keith Everitt placed third to advance to the state championship.

Leyton took first place in team results with a total of 363 points for the D1-6 District Speech Contest. Brady was in second place with 285 points, Maxwell finished in third with 273 points, Paxton had a fourth-place finish with 266 points and Anselmo-Merna placed fifth with 155 points.

Rounding out District D1-6, Mullen was in sixth place with 118 points, Creek Valley finished in seventh place with 82 points, Garden County was in eighth place with 64 points and Crawford had five points to place ninth.

The state speech championship will be held Thursday, March 24, at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. It starts at 8 a.m. for Class D2 and 9:30 a.m. for Class D1.
