Sidney earns state golf berth

MCCOOK – Sidney’s golf team overcame deplorable conditions here Monday to accomplish something the school has not done in more than five years by qualifying its entire golf team for the state meet.

“That was our goal at the beginning of the season,” coach Chuck Christiansen said.

Golfers vying for state spots through play in the B-4 District meet faced almost every nasty turn possible in western Nebraska’s weather, including high winds, mist, 30-degree temperatures and even a lightning delay.

“The conditions were so bad the kids just had to grind it out and gut it out,” said Christiansen.

Despite those challenges, Christiansen was very please with the Raiders’ performance. On the way to a second place team finish, Sidney’s golf team was the only one in the field to have all five members score in the 80s.

Nathan Dvorak led the Raiders’ charge posting a fourth-place 83. Dvorak went out with a round of 38, closing the back nine with a 45.

Also earning a medal was Connor Dormann, his round of 86 good enough for 10th place. The remaining Sidney players finished in a pack, with Brady Radcliffe in 12th with an 88, while Ryan Birner and Cole Westfall both scored 89s to finish in 13th nd 14th.

Sidney qualified for state as a team by virtue of its second place finish, scoring a 346. The first three teams qualify, as do the top 10 individuals. McCook won the team title (339) and Cozad (363) was third.

The Raiders travel to Lincoln this weekend for the state meet at Pioneers Golf Course. They will participate in practice rounds Sunday and Monday, with the meet being played on Tuesday and Wednesday.
