Sidney's High Choir bound for California

Sunrise came pretty early for the Sidney High School (SHS) choir, who was bound for a choir competition in Los Angeles, California, Thursday morning. Both the SHS concert choir and the Sidney Singers will be performing in the competition, spending five days in the City of Angels.

The choir will be performing the same set of songs they performed at the District Music Contest, as will the Sidney Singers, who be performing their original choral set.

The concert choir will be performing Lamentations of Jeremiah, "Water Night," and "Chariots". Sidney Singers will be performing "Ngana" (pronounced N-Gah-Nah), "Illumina le Tenebrae", and "Battle of Jericho".

"These are very advanced pieces, and are incredibly difficult for some college choirs, let alone a high school all volunteer choir," choir member Austin Jacobsen said, "I am excited to compete in Los Angeles and with choirs that are performing at the level that the Sidney choir competes at."

Director David Mead said that there were two divisions competing in the competition, Division A, which Sidney will compete in, is for choirs with 750 students or less, and class AA, for choirs with 750 or more students. "There is only one other choir competing in the Class A group," Mead said.

Of the 83 students in the choir this year, Mead said 44 will be traveling to the competition in Los Angeles.

Jacobsen was a graduating senior this year and a tenor two in the choir. He said, for eighteen straight years, the choir has received straight 1's, or a perfect score from every judge, at the annual district music contest.

"Every 4 years, Mr. Mead has taken the choir to different locations around the country to compete at different choir festivals. Previous trips have included New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, and of course the trip this year to Los Angeles," Jacobsen said.

The participating students gathered at Saint Patricks Catholic Church Wednesday evening, to discuss the details of the upcoming trip, before performing their final rehearsal for their families and community.
