SHS choir returns victorious

After a five-day trip to the City of Angels, the Sidney High School choir returns victorious.

From May 25 to May 30, 44 students traveled from Sidney to the Music in the Parks choir competition in Los Angeles.

The competition itself was held Saturday, May 28 at Valencia High School.

"Since Disney is such a popular destination, there were a lot of choirs in the competition that were spread out over approximately 20 weeks," said David Mead, SHS choir director. "One of the ladies that worked at the competition site with 'Music In The Parks' who has listened to all of the choirs over the course of the 20 weeks, said that we were among the best that she has heard."

Mead said that there were two classes of competition. Class A which Sidney competed in, was for choirs with 750 students or less, and class AA, for choirs with 750 or more students.

The concert choir performed "Lamentations of Jeremiah,""Water Night," and "Chariots". Sidney Singers performed "Ngana," "Illumina le Tenebrae," and "Battle of Jericho" at the competition.

According to graduating senior Austin Jacobsen, both the choir and Sidney singers received superior ratings, which is the top rating the choirs could receive at the competition. Ratings include: Superior, Excellent, Good, Okay, and Fair. Sidney Singers won the competition overall as the top choir at the contest.

"So, in total, Sidney High School is coming home with 3 trophies," Jacobsen said.

"It was a wonderful trip, from the competition itself to all of the attractions we visited," Mead said, "The students were wonderful ambassadors for Sidney High School and all of the adult sponsors helped make the trip a success, they kept things in order. The trip wouldn't have been possible without them.

"Living in an isolated choir location such as Western Nebraska, then coming to California and performing and getting great remarks is very rewarding. I'm proud of all the work that was put in throughout the year. It all paid off at the competition."
